The Banner Project: Movements curated by Duwenavue Santé Johnson and Suzanna Urminska

July 3–August 1
2026
Location: Main Gallery (First-Floor)
Time: Pier Operating Hours

This exhibition takes many forms, such as growth, migration, rhythm, repetition, and connection, all depicted through hand-painted banners made of jewel-toned flag material.

Inspired by “How Water Moves,” an early 2026 show co-curated by Santé Johnson and Suzanna Urminska, this unique display features local artists expressing identity through the lens of water, art, and storytelling, and welcoming us all to reflect on our connection to rivers and to one another.

Metaphors of water and of movement can challenge the viewer to see our physical spaces in both familiar and unexpected ways. A language for our times can bring new meanings and new memories: what will yours be?

This exhibition is part of ArtxStitch’s (Studio 3) multi-gallery experience of concurrent exhibitions, running from July 3 through August 1, 2026, curated by Cherry Street Pier studio artist Duwenavue Santé Johnson.

About the curators:
Duwenavue Santé Johnson is a BIPOC artist with a rich heritage spanning both the northern and southern regions of the United States over the past four centuries. This diverse upbringing has significantly shaped Johnson’s artistic lens, fostering a relentless quest for equilibrium, aesthetic allure, and steadiness within her masterpieces.

Suzanna Urminska has designed and stewarded programming and partnerships in libraries, archives, and museums for more than 20 years, connecting lived experiences with public spaces. As a first-generation American born and raised in intergenerational, culturally rich environments, she has been shaped by ongoing dialogues on belonging and longing that have helped shape her curatorial and creative practices.
