Wings and Water: The Space Between by GrioXArts
This July, experience Wings and Water: The Space Between, a powerful community-driven art installation at Cherry Street Pier. Created by resident artists GrioXArts, the exhibit explores identity, healing, and freedom through textile storytelling, reimagining what it means to be seen and heard in Philadelphia.
At the heart of the exhibition is a massive “flagspace,” a bold reimagining of the American flag made from hand-embroidered bandanas. Stitched together by artist Duwenavue Santé Johnson, each piece reflects a personal or cultural story shared during free community workshops. These colorful tapestries will hang from the Pier’s trusses, offering a moving portrait of collective identity.
Studio artists from Cherry Street Pier will also contribute smaller flags, adding new layers to the installation and community connection.
Alongside the hanging works, guests can explore behind-the-scenes stories, artist insights, and community contributions that brought the project to life.
Community Workshops:
Held in Studio 3, past workshops in Spring 2025 invited Philadelphians of all ages to reflect, stitch, and share their stories. New dates will be announced soon — follow @GrioXArts and @CherryStreetPier for updates.
