May First Friday

May 7
Location: The Pier
Time: 4 pm to 9 pm

Hello, May! We have some amazing, new experiences coming your way.

This First Friday will be the best one yet with the debut of two more stupendous exhibitions — resident artist Ed Marion’s Fat Man, Smiling and Pennsylvania Ballet’s Spread Your Wings in partnership with Mural Arts.

Ed Marion’s Fat Man, Smiling
The second Cherry Street Pier exhibition by resident artist Ed Marion is a series of 120 self-portraits made over a 40-year period showcasing Marion in various seasons of his life. Made through good times and bad, they are the residue of the performance of sitting before a mirror and trying one’s best to see who one really is. On display through May 30.

PA Ballet’s Spread Your Wings
Pennsylvania Ballet’s Spread Your Wings in partnership with Mural Arts is a dynamic display of photography, video, an indoor mural, and live performances to inspire creativity and personal engagement with dance and storytelling. On display through June 6. RSVP for Opening Night.

Opening of Twenty Twenty – Twenty Twenty One
Mixed-media artists Evan Greensweig, Aaron B. Cohen, and Lucy H. West exhibit works created in their Philly studio in 2020 and 2021. The pieces document these tragic times, yet reflect each artist’s emotional exploration of tragedy and the necessary introspection needed to nurture a fruitful future in a scarred world. On display through the end of May.

John Schlesinger’s After The Fall Exhibition Extension
Noted installation artist John Schlesinger remakes and reimagines the tiny room under the Pier’s DJ booth as a super-concentrated hallucinogenic reanimation of After the Fall. See this installation now before it changes dramatically over the next month.

Family Art Nights with Portside Art Center
Gather the family for a fun paint night with resident artist Portside Arts Center. Create masterpieces for your home or to gift to your favorite person. All ages and skill levels welcome.

Open Studios
See the Pier’s resident artists at work in their studios and purchase an original piece of artwork, too.

Find delectable seasonal fare and local brews at the grand reopening of The Philly River Stroll Garden Restaurant. Plus, enjoy Philly favorites, French Toast Bites, and Rita’s Italian Ice.
